CELEBRATING 10 YEARS TOGETHER!

One BIG Goal

Unity For A Solution has one BIG goal. We want to solve the animal overpopulation crisis for the benefit of the health, safety, and quality of life for Houstonians and homeless animals. Did you know one unspayed female dog can lead to 67,000 puppies in only six years? Yes, a mama dog can have three litters of seven puppies each year – that’s 21 puppies in a single year. Each of those female puppies will then produce 21 more puppies. All these dogs go unspayed and the cycle continues. These dogs often roam the streets, are neglected and live with disease. It’s not healthy for the animals, and it’s not healthy for Houstonians.

Unity For A Solution is a collaborative organization composed of animal welfare organizations, civic groups, businesses and others. Individually we all work to foster a healthy animal community by educating residents about animal healthcare and providing free spay-neuter services in targeted areas of Houston where animal overpopulation is rampant. Together, we combine our voices to advocate for free or low-cost spay and neuter clinics across the city. We want to end the cycle.

Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world.

About Unity For A Solution

Houston has an animal welfare crisis. Countless numbers of unwanted dogs and cats roam the streets, parks and bayous in neighborhoods throughout the city. At local shelters, thousands more are euthanized annually. Other animals spend their lives at the end of the chain or are otherwise mistreated; the Houston SPCA alone investigates over 7,000 cruelty cases every year.

Unity for a Solution was established in 2013 as a collaboration between animal welfare organizations, civic groups, businesses and others to raise awareness and educate the public about this crisis. One of Unity’s biggest goals is to provide more spay neuter options for residents living in areas hardest hit by overpopulation. Often, family pets that are not fixed produce unwanted litters that end up on the streets so spaying and neutering pets is an important step in reducing overpopulation. To date, Unity has fixed over 3,000 pets throughout Houston and Harris County.

Unity is also working to increase the public’s knowledge of animal cruelty and mistreatment happening around the city. By working with law enforcement, Unity hopes to bring greater attention to these incidents and more importantly, decrease tolerance for their occurrence.

While many Houstonians don’t know about our animal welfare issues, they are a public health, public safety and public relations concern for all residents. To spread the word, Unity relies on social media, billboards and outreach to inform the public. Ultimately, Unity wants to engage others in developing a humane and comprehensive plan to improve conditions for Houston's unwanted and stray animals. The plan will include additional spay neuter options, especially in low income areas, more efforts to educate pet owners and a broader public awareness campaign.
